Scan Options

Access this feature from: Scan computer (gear icon) ▸ Scan Options

The Scan Options screen gives you access to a range of predefined scans that are provided to help secure your PC. To initiate a scan, click the associated tile. You can also click the gear icon in the upper-right corner of certain tiles to adjust scan parameters.

Click Schedule Scan at the bottom of the screen to create a custom scan or schedule regular scanning.

Run a Full Computer Scan

Click Full Computer Scan to perform a comprehensive, all-in-one scan. This scan merges scan methods to detect malware, poorly rated browser add-ons, and performance issues.

  • Antivirus scan: scans for malware and other threats.
  • Browser extensions scan: scans for suspicious browser add-ons and extensions with poor ratings.
  • Performance Scan: scans your system for useless data and for issues which may be affecting the speed and security of your PC. To resolve any found issues, you are offered to install the AVG PC TuneUp application. Read more...

When the scan finishes, a results screen appears. By default, you are informed about which actions have been taken with any detected threats.

Run other antivirus scans

Click any of the following tiles to perform a predefined antivirus scan:

  • Deep Virus Scan: performs an in-depth scan of your system that checks your storage drives and memory for malware. This scan may take several minutes or more depending on the number of files in your storage and the performance ability of your system.
  • USB/DVD Scan: performs a scan of any removable storage devices that are currently connected to your PC, such as external hard drives, USB flash drives, CDs, and DVDs.
  • File or Folder Scan: asks you to select an individual file or folder for scanning. You can select single files by expanding a folder, or select an entire folder.

When a scan finishes, a results screen appears. By default, you are informed about which actions have been taken with any detected threats.

You can configure how each of the above scans handles detected threats by clicking the gear icon on a scan tile. However, we recommend you only modify settings for custom scans. Read more...

Run a Performance Scan

Click Performance Scan to scan your system for useless data and for issues which may be affecting the speed and the security of your PC. The scan covers the following areas:

  • Registry Issues: unnecessary registry entries in your system that could cause your PC to slow down, for example, during startup and shutdown.
  • System Cache & Logs: junk files and items stored in your PC's system that could be taking up disk space.
  • Browser Data: data stored in browsers that may be taking up disk space.
  • Outdated Software: outdated third party software that could cause vulnerabilities on your PC.

When the scan finishes, a results screen appears and you are informed of any found issues.

To resolve found issues, click Install to fix to install AVG PC TuneUp, a tool that allows you to clean your PC.

Run a Boot-time Scan

Click Boot-time Scan to scan your PC during the next system startup before any application is launched. Scanning during startup improves the chances of detecting and removing malware before it can counteract.

Run a custom scan

To create and run a custom scan:

  1. Click Schedule Scan.
  2. On the Scan Parameters screen, create a name for your scan and specify which areas and file types to scan. You can use the tabs on the left panel to configure other scan settings. Read more...
  3. Click OK.

Your custom scan appears on the Scan Options screen below the predefined scan tiles. Click Run Scan Now next to your scan's name to begin scanning.

To additionally change the settings of any scan in the list, click the gear icon in the relevant row. To remove a scan, click the trash bin icon

Schedule an automatic scan

You can configure AVG Antivirus to perform a scan at a time convenient for you. To schedule a scan:

  1. Click Schedule Scan.
  2. On the Scan Parameters screen, create a name for your scan and specify which areas and file types to scan. You can use the tabs on the left panel to configure other scan settings. Read more...
  3. Select the Scheduling tab from the left panel.
  4. Tick Schedule this scan and specify if you want the scan to run on just one occasion (Once) or periodically (Daily, Weekly, or Monthly).
  5. Manage your preferences for the following options:
    • Do not start the scan if running on batteries: tick to ignore schedule settings if your PC is not connected to a power source.
    • Pause the scan if batteries mode begins: tick to pause the scan if your PC is removed from its power source during the scan.
    • Wake up the system to start the scan (if in sleep mode): tick to run the scheduled scan even if your PC is in power-saving mode.
    • Shut down the system after the scan finishes: tick to automatically turn off your PC after the scan.
  6. Set the time that you want the scan to run in 24-hour format (for example, instead of 3pm use 15:00).
  7. Specify the day that you want the scan to run.
  8. Click OK.

Your scheduled scan appears on the Scan Options screen below the predefined scan tiles. You can view when your scan is scheduled to run. To run the scheduled scan manually, click Run Scan Now.

Note: Scheduled scans are unable to run when your PC is switched off.
